Mission Statement To encourage each student as a unique individual with the potential to become a valuable asset to society in order to enhance his or her intellectual, social, emotional and cultural development, enabling him or her to think critically and creatively and to be always socially acceptable. Motto Excellence Green Island High School is located in Cousins' Cove about two miles from Green Island Western Hanover on the highway between two tourist areas, Montego Bay and Negril. History The school was established in 1969 and was one of the fifty Junior Secondary Schools in the island built to offer education to children who were not successful in entering the traditional high schools. With the introduction of the grades 10 and 11 programmes in 1974, the school progressed from a Junior Secondary to a New Secondary School. In 1998, the school was further upgraded to a Comprehensive High School and finally achieved High school status in 2000. Population The school operates on a shift system for the academic year 2008 - 09 and has a total population of 1841 students with 949 on the morning shift and 892 on the afternoon shift. The morning shift is held from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm. The afternoon goes from 12:00 pm. To 5:00 pm. Our input covers a wide area as students come from St. James, Westmoreland at both seven and eight grades. The curriculum covers the core subjects: English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies, other traditional CXC/CSEC subjects, as well as the technical/vocational subjects such as Agriculture, Building Construction, Auto-Mechanics, Clothing and Textiles, Electrical Installation, Cosmetology, Food and Nutrition, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Woodwork. Examinations Examinations taken are the Grade 9 ROSE Examination, the Caribbean Examination Council Examination (CXC/CSEC and CCSLC), the Jamaica School Certificate Examination (JSC) and National Council on Technical Vacation Education and Training (NCTVET.) Community Involvement The Tourism Industry benefits at all levels from the graduates of the school who occupy supervisory or managerial positions in different areas of the sector. They are a part of the cadre of workers in areas such as housekeeping, catering, landscaping and maintenance. The school is also regularly involved in various outreach activities which include raising awareness of current issues through outdoor dramatic productions, and visits to state care facilities for children and the elderly.
